Pole style curtain rods often have a more classic interior design value than ordinary curtain rods. These are thick, wooden or metal poles on which curtains or drapes with looped tops hang. Curtain poles have an elegant look and can be used as part of an overall interior design scheme to add sophistication to your home or apartment. The following are some considerations when using poles:
Suit Poles to Window Size
Curtain poles come in a variety of thicknesses and lengths. These should be suited to the size of the window. A thick, bulky curtain pole will not look right on a small window (such as a kitchen, bedroom, or guest room window) and a thin pole will seem out of place on a large living room or dining room window. This stands to reason, but someone inexperienced may make the mistake of using a pole with the wrong thickness or length on a window. This is an interior design error that looks visually clumsy so avoid it.
Suit Poles to Curtain/Drape Size and Weight
You also need to suit the pole length and thickness to that of the drapes or curtains. This is both for reasons of visual balance and simply so that the pole can support the weight effectively. Heavy drapes, for instance, need poles of greater thickness or strength than thick fabric curtains of the same length. Combine weight and thickness considerations with what looks balanced from a visual standpoint and work from there.
Consider Matching Wall Colour
You may want to consider buying painted poles or painting them to match the colour of the walls in the rooms where they will be placed. This can give colour continuity to the window treatment and make it look sophisticated and deliberate. You may also wish to have a contrasting colour for another sort of continuity and balance. Of course, if you are using metal poles this will not even be an issue.
Ornamental Ends
Many poles are fashioned with attractive and sophisticated ornamental ends. These may be classic and elaborate or modern and geometric or minimal. Choose ornamental ends that work in some way with the existing décor of the room and with the size and shape of the window. The ornamentation on these poles is one of the most important parts of their visual appeal and sophistication from a design standpoint. Having the ornamentation in some way complement the décor of the room shows good planning and forethought and makes the window treatment more aesthetically informed and thematic.
Wood or Metal?
Wood or metal are the two most common materials for these poles. Deciding which one to purchase should be based on design considerations dealing with the themes of the whole room. Is metal of a silvery or brass hue used in other parts of the room? If so you may wish to match it with the poles you choose. Is the room predominantly wood except for things like door handles and window latching, suggesting that wooden poles are a better option? You can also consider weight and size – metal may be stronger if you have especially heavy drapes and large windows.
Curtain poles combined with stylish and well-made curtains or drapes can give a lot of sophistication and elegance to a room. These poles can be found at a variety of locations online and off. Choose them with an eye to style and function as well as price if that is an issue.
